Read More on Link BuildingNowadays if we want our website to be successful, we need to work with high quality content, niches, search engine optimization and enormous competition. And that list is simply the starting point. We probably have to acquaint ourselves with copywriting and marketing and converting our visitors into buyers. But, for the majority of webmasters, the big difficulty is bringing in traffic.

That brings us to the subject of this particular article. How do I go about attracting Internet surfers to my website? One of the answers to that question is backlinks! So, exactly what are backlinks and exactly what do backlinks have to do with attracting traffic to my website?

Well, there are two basic forms of traffic, paid and organic. Examples of paid traffic are things like advertising through pay per click networks, placing banners on other peoples' websites and any other way in which you are able to pay to get a web surfer's attention and persuade him to visit your website. If you are focused on paid traffic then you do not have to pay much attention to backlinks.

Organic traffic is traffic which comes when someone does a search on a search engine for a subject that they're interested in. After the free listings come up the surfer then clicks on a link to visit the appropriate webpage. When it comes to organic traffic the webmaster does not have to pay directly for the link that the surfer clicks on.

Often, organic traffic is simply called free traffic. Though it can be, it usually isn't exactly free. To have a website page listed on the first couple of pages of results the webmaster will have to do quite a bit of work. This brings us back to backlinks.

Very often, the quality and number of backlinks attached to a website are what determines sites that appear after we perform a search. A backlink is defined as nothing more than a hyperlink from one website to another. So it is very helpful if you have a whole lot of websites linking to your website if you want to have your pages ranked well in the organic search engine results.

But do not forget that quality is also important. A backlink will be considered to be of high quality if:

* The page rank of the website linking to you is fairly high (ideally a PR3 or above) and the higher the better.

* The words which make up the hyperlink (referred to as the 'anchor' text) are highly relevant to the topic of the web page to which the link is pointing. (You do not want to use "click here"!)

* The topic on the website where the backlink originates is related to the topic on your website.

* The website linking to you has plenty of high quality backlinks pointing to it.

There are far more criteria, but those listed here are the foundations of a sound linking policy.

So, just how does a webmaster go about building up the necessary quantity of good quality backlinks to his website? There are dozens of ways of doing this and even more software programs that are designed to assist in providing the answer. Buying the software increases the cost of your backlinks.

The only really free way is to wait for other webmasters to find your website and like it enough to link to it. That's great, but will take a while. You can of course get in touch with other webmasters and see if they will trade links with you. You provide them with a link from your website and they give you one from their website in return. These are however known as reciprocal links and are generally thought to be of uncertain value these days.

Another way is to make use of Article Marketing which initially involves writing articles on subjects which are relevant to your website. Your articles are then submitted to a selection of article directories and include links of your own choice in the resources box which is attached at the bottom of your content. Submitting your website to several website directories is yet another option which can fit into the free category.

You might also decide to pay to get backlinks. One simple way is to buy a link directly. Internet marketing discussion boards are an excellent place to find linking opportunities for sale. You could have to pay as much as $50 a month or more to put your link on a site with a PR of 5. You'll get a lot of traffic from it, but you will have to pay for it. Naturally the lower the PR is then the lower the cost.

No matter which technique you choose, building backlinks to your website is critical to your success in ranking in the search engines. You want to acquire hundreds or if possible thousands of them. The important thing is to get going and build up your links steadily over the coming months so that you can begin to enjoy a steady and growing flow of traffic to your website.
