Read More on Search Engine MarketingDo you remember what the Internet was like pre-Google?

What a mess.

Kinda of like the DOS of data compilation.

But then Google came along and everyone shouted yahoo boss is changing everything. All you needed to do was type in a keyword phrase and out popped the most relevant results. Thus when you performed a search for "electronic newsletter services" out popped all the highly relevant results for your keyword selection.

Unless, of course, some sly fox keyword stuffed their website with "electronic newsletter services" and you found yourself looking at the underside of a pig pen on steroids instead. That was just one of the many ruthless strategies people used to implement until Google started slapping them around.

Suffice it to say, as helpful as Google was it had it's share of problems. Given that necessity is the mother of invention out popped the social networking systems next. Were you one of the many who wondered what all those funny looking buttons were for? I sure was and I wasn't about to get involved. After all, what can be better than Google?

Today, I realize that changing the Internet was necessary for its survival. I'm sure there are things I still don't understand about social networking, social bookmarking and whatever other social you want to talk about. However social media has made results much more relevant that was available from the straight Google days. The problem went from results that were not relevant to a run on spam. Spam Email. Spam profiles. Spam Canned. And whatever other kind of spam you might think of.

Fortunately the next wave of change is upon us in the form of Yahoo's new "Build your Own Search Service" (BOSS) utilities. The idea is to combine results from search engines together with Web 2.0 technologies to produce a highly relevant niche targeted search engine for people to use. I am as of yet unaware of the disadvantages of this concept. One potential one that I can think of is that there will be search engines in all shapes and sizes if Yahoo has its way.

Further, their utility allows you to build searches around
* Content
* Images
* News
And it includes a spelling utility so that misspelling issues are addressed before they go live.

Yahoo Boss is changing the Internet by combining the best of both worlds into a single entity that will be useful to all. Will they be successful in their pursuit? That is yet to be determined. However, if they do things right we will soon be witnessing the next growth pain of the World Wide Web.
