We have Steve, a 38 year old who runs his own company, which specializes in web design. As you may know, there are so many companies in this industry that it is very difficult to make a choice whom to hire. Steve contacted me because his business has not quite gone as he thought. He knows he is good at what he does, but he has mediocre sales results. I sat down with Steve and asked a little about what he does. After a while, I see clearly that Steve is no different from the others when he has his meetings with his sales meetings. I ask Steve what he is good at in his job. He says: I am average at everything, but doing nothing special. I know that this is not true because I know how good Steve is. After much discussion back and forth, we find three things which separate Steve from the crowd. 1. Steve is reliable beyond the ordinary. 2. Steve has web solutions that customers can manage themselves, which makes his job incredibly flexible. 3. Steve has a level of knowledge beyond the ordinary in his field. All this comes at a very competitive price. When Steve then sells his services and points out these unique characteristics, it makes it easier for the customer to select him. To substantially increase his sales in this way is pretty easy when you know what you are good at. So now my question to you. What are your unique characteristics that distinguish you from the crowd in your job or your business? List at least 3 things that separate you from the crowd. Do your customers or your superiors know what your unique qualities are? If not, make sure you tell them that when you sell your product or service. At the Olympic Games in 1976 in Montreal Canada, there was a fraction of a second difference between the winner of the 100 meter run from that runner who came in last place. Whoever won had some unique characteristics that distinguished him from the crowd. He got all the glory and became enshrined in history books forever, while the other names are forgotten after only a few weeks. It is on these values sponsors choose to spend millions on those who have unique characteristics, as well as customers who want to bet their money on what you have to offer. Good luck with these exercises and do not forget that you are unique. Good Luck!
