Aside from the press releases, we also composed a very brief one and a half page letter, which told the story of how my life was changed by a DC back when I was just a college student. I've also added a simple expression of gratitude to all the people that I had the privilege of caring for throughout my career. I mailed one to everybody in our list. A week prior to the event, my staff busied themselves decorating the office and putting up fliers. After that they got on the phone with a selected group of patients to spread the word about the event. On the day of the event, the result of our efforts was totally surprising. And the most amazing part of it all is that we are still seeing responses to our efforts, almost a full month after. The steps that we took were all very simple and yet the result was more than we could have asked for. It had brought back a lot of former patients including those who I have not seen in 10-20 years. Aside from former patients coming back to see us, there is also a major influx of new patients referrals. Many of them are adult children and families of many former patients. Without a doubt, this was one of the best marketing events of our practice year to date. My point is systems can really work well. You just need to make sure that you set them up as systems. Also, make sure that you continuously implement them on a monthly basis. You only have to put in very little effort organizing such simple systems but the returns are so much bigger and it pays big dividends. Remember to use your resources to improve your systems. Every little thing that you'll do will help your practice benefit more. ------------------------------ Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design.
