In the past, before ecommerce, the high street was the place for companies to make their name. Large businesses still dominate the major shopping areas and it is impossible for small companies to establish themselves. It is too much of a risk as the rent and maintenance of a large store is very expensive. Add to this the cost of an array of employees and it is just not a viable option without enormous financial backing In contrast, running a business via the internet takes away the need for a front end high street store and the multitude of employees for customer service. A website business can be run with storage for products and a small team of employees to maintain the site and control sales. In some cases, if the business is offering a service or software product instead of physical produce there is no need to even rent a storage area. Resultantly, an online business can be run on a fraction of the cost of a high street branch. As a result, the market is more open to new or niche services that can make a name for themselves online. Companies can be very successful if they are providing something few others are. This would have been very difficult to establish on the high streets as there just wasn't the strength in the market for something niche. Ecommerce has grown exponentially and money transfer services make setting up for internet sales a simple process. Online credit card processing has become a very simple process, making more and more customers feel secure in making internet purchases. It seems apparent that with more and more people turning to the internet for their shopping, there will be more opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to make their name in ecommerce.
