Know your target audience--Step one is the most important step. The biggest mistake marketers make is not knowing (or understanding) your target audience. It's a mistake that newbies and experienced affiliate marketers alike all make at some point. I wish that I could give you a good idea on how find you target audience, but the truth is that when finding your audience, every situation is unique. The most consistent method that I've found is to research and shop for a product yourself. This way you will understand the buying process from the perspective of someone who is looking for what you are promoting. THIS IS NOT EASY. Keep in mind, even Fortune 500 corporations misunderstand or don't know their target audience sometimes. Know what is hot and happening--This goes back to understanding your target audience. You'll do well if you are interested in the product that you promote. Many "gurus" tell you to start by focusing on your favorite hobby first, but what if your hobby is something that nobody is interested in (except you)? I would recommend researching what the "hot" niches are within the past three months, and selecting a niche from the "hot" list that you could be interested in. Use the power of Google Adwords--Use this powerful marketing tool to try and earn more in commissions than your PPC costs. Other PPC companies, such as Yahoo, Miva, and 7search, are viable options. Promote the "in" things--It is basic common sense, but is often missed. Sell people what they are looking for most, and in the case of the internet selling information based products and electronics services works best. Targeted Traffic Driving--Don't go ballistic trying to buy a lot of traffic in order to drive them towards your site. Instead rely on targeted traffic driving by imagining yourself as a potential customer. Look for alternate revenue streams too--Affiliate links and advertisements are not the sole means of generating revenue for your website. In fact some people stay away from affiliate linking because they tend to divert attention from the Adsense ads. Follow the results--Use tracking devices or packages that come with most affiliate programs to keep a tab on the links that are most active and those that are least. This will help your future planning, as far as affiliate programs are concerned. Take part in forums and discussion boards--This helps you talk about your business and advertise it to various people and more importantly helps you understand things from a consumer's point of view. Use e-mails--E-mail product reviews and special features to people and keep them expectant for future e-mails. Don't straightaway send prospects to the merchant's page--Warm your visitors up by ‘pre-selling' them giving a non-biased (yet favorable) review of the product. ------------------------------ Lopez Jones is owner of TheSearchLounge.com--a search engine optimization agency that specializes in website promotion services for small businesses and new internet marketers.
