As part of my series of articles and videos on The Slight Edge book, written by Jeff Olson, today I am going to discuss the Two Life Paths from Chapter six.

I believe life is split into 3 things: the past, the now and the future. What is the most important? If you asked a lot of people I suspect you would get different answers, such as:

- How can you move on without understanding your past, as this is what has formed you into who you currently are and will shape your future
- You cannot influence the past or the future, you can only influence the now, so what you do right now is the most important thing
- The past is the past, you cannot change that. Your future is what is important as you can still shape your future because it is yet to happen.

All 3 are interesting and valid arguments. I personally believe in the middle answer, that what you do NOW is the most important, as this will influence your future. You can not directly impact your future, just influence it by doing things now.

Your past contains very useful information, but that is all it is. It has helped you become the person you currently are, but this does not mean you have to be the same person in the future. Yes it is important to learn from your past, but make sure you do just that, learn. Do not let it hinder your future by bringing forward the negative aspects of your past.

So many people live in their past and because of this are actually afraid of the future. When this occurs your past will influence your future rather than lay the platform for you to grow from. We all have made mistakes in the past, now you need to accept them as what they are, learning opportunities, and nothing more, and move on. You need to be careful to not beat yourself up about your past mistakes as the more you do this the more it will influence your future.

Lets use an example here to explain this. Imagine you have a business that utilises multilevel marketing to drive multiple sources of internet income. You need to display a level of confidence that will attract key people to your business. But unless you are comfortable with yourself your potential business contacts will feel this lack of confidence and will not be attracted to you. It is the same as when you are searching for your future partner, people are generally attracted to confident people.

Lets try an exercise on this to understand what path you are on. I would like you to reflect on your past and jot down the positives and negatives that you can think of from your past. Now jot down what you want from your future, what long term goals you have planned. Now I would like you to think of what you are doing now to achieve those goals. But when you do this I would like you to think carefully about what is stopping you doing more and what from your past is hindering your confidence in achieving more? Please try to be honest with yourself on this as it could help a lot in understanding yourself and help you be more successful.

Now once you have done this think about what you can do to change anything from your past that is hindering your future. Remember, your past is simply the foundation of who you currently are, not who you will become.

You can not change the past but you can influence the future by doing things now!

Today I have discussed the Two Life Paths, that people have a choice on how they will shape their future. You can use the past as a learning platform that influences your future or one that directly impacts your future. If you allow it to directly impact your past, by bringing forward all of your mistakes into the now, you will struggle to achieve your goals. Instead you need to use the past as the foundation of who you are, not who you will be in the future, and use the now to shape your future.

Have a quick look at my video on this chapter where I provide you an example of how people can put you down when you are going on a different life path from everyone else.
