Read More on Investment & Financial StrategyFor generations, children have been collecting a variety of trading cards to add to the collections of their favorite sports, superheroes or anything else that came in card form. When we were kids, many of us remember stashing piles of these cards in special hiding places, where no-one could retrieve them. Every penny that we made went toward buying a pack of trading cards that came with a stick of bubble gum. Some of us have even kept them, while others gave theirs away or simply forgot about them over the years. It almost makes you wonder how many stacks of old trading cards are collecting dust somewhere, long forgotten by some young boy or girl.

But there are many adults who still take this very seriously. Today, there are many very serious collectors of trading cards, mostly of sports personalities. In fact, many of those bits of cardboard we treasured in our childhoods are now truly treasures. A few of them have become virtual gold mines in that they are worth a lot of money to certain collectors. You can bring back the days of the savvy card trading of your youth, and this time, besides being a lot of fun, it can also be very lucrative. And you don't even have chew all that gum to achieve this dream!

You can also use this wonderful tradition of youth to introduce a sense of history to your children. By showing them the ins and outs of trading cards, you will have fun while showing them how we had fun in the old days. Kids today get cards of video or animated characters, but that~s not nearly as exciting as our old sports trading cards. Besides learning some valuable sports history, you will also be embarking on an activity that you and your children can pursue happily for hours together. It will also teach them the value of such cards and collecting in general. And, who knows? Maybe they will get that one that turns out to be a collector's item and will be worth a lot of money someday. Yours will not be the first child to dream of financing his or her college education or their home from their sports card collection.

There are plenty of girls out there who are interested in sports, or maybe are just interested in collecting these cards for the future rewards they may reap, so don't just think of trading card collections for boys only. You can find a fun way to spend time with your son or daughter. This is important in an age when children and parents seem to be growing more apart. When you develop a common interest like this, you build a closer bond with your child.

If your children don~t appear to show an interest at first, try taking them to a hobby shop and casually walking through the area where the trading cards are kept. Use the opportunity to discuss the different figures from the past and relate some of your favorite childhood memories to them. Chances are, they~ll come around sooner or later, and you~ll be on your way to a parent-child activity that can be enjoyed at any time.

It doesn~t really matter whether your approach is focused on the sentimental value of the trading cards, or if you~re attempting to teach your kids the value of investing. When all of that~s stripped away, the fact of the matter is that you~ll have spent quality time with your kids, and will have introduced them to a good old-fashioned wholesome pastime in the process ~ and if they happen to make a bit of a profit from some of those trading cards in the future, so much the better.
