The latest medical research shows that approximately 90% of systemic diseases are linked to symptoms in the mouth. There is also strong evidence that heart disease, strokes, diabetes and lung disease may be caused, or at least worsened, by poor dental health: reason enough for taking the time to find a quality dentist. Yet when looking for a dentist, the majority of people take the easiest approach: typically choosing the same dentist as a family member or friend, the nearest dentist to their home or work, or simply the cheapest option available. These approaches, although fast and easy, can lead to significant problems down the road. Some of these include: - Paying too much for your dental care - Having to wait for weeks to get an appointment - Feeling stressed and uncomfortable with your dentist - Choosing a dentist that doesn't suit your/your family's needs Although it may seem like a daunting task at first, finding the right dentist is actually quite straightforward. All it takes is a little time to consider several key issues before you decide to register. This will help you get a good understanding of the different options available so you can decide what best suits your circumstances, and your pocket. By following these simple steps, you'll be sure to experience a host of benefits that many people miss out on by registering with the first dentist they find. The first step is to consider your needs. List any special requirements that you may have. Consider issues such as private vs. NHS dentists, your current or prospective insurance plans, location, opening times and any other special requirements that you may have. Then find a list of available options (check the Yellow Pages or the local health authority website) and then compare them with your list. Rule out unsuitable dental practices (poor location, inconvenient opening times, etc) and cross these off your list. After reducing your list to a more manageable size, check with friends, family, colleagues and other people you trust to get a better idea of the strengths and weaknesses of your prospects (good dentists attract great word of mouth!) but bear in mind that your ideal dentist may be the opposite of what your neighbour would prefer. Highlight the best prospects and delete any that don't seem right for you. Once you have just a few good prospects remaining on your list, visit each dental clinic, ask whatever questions you may have (it's a good idea to prepare these in advance), and have a look around. Does the clinic seem clean and professional? Do you get the sense that the staff are well-organised? What is their attitude to customer care? Of the various clinics you have visited, choose the one you feel most comfortable with and schedule a basic appointment for a check-up and cleaning to allow you to assess the dentist and the quality of service available (without some kind of official rating system, this is the only way you can really see if a dentist is a good fit for you). If you have some misgivings, you may wish save your next appointment for another contender for your list. If all goes well, however, congratulations! You may just have found your new dentist!
